Taking Care of Babies' Skin

Whether you are a first-time parent or have many years of parenting experience, bringing a new life into the world is a daunting task. There is so much planning and mental preparation involved that you end up becoming exhausted before your baby has even arrived! For those of you who have done it before, do you still have the brain power to remember how you did it last time? Or have your current children sucked this out of you? In most cases it is the latter.

One thing that parents often overlook when planning for their new arrival is how they are going to take care of their little one’s skin. Although it might seem like a less important aspect of child raising, this couldn’t be further from the truth. When a baby leaves their protective environment (the uterus), they become exposed to a number of potentially harmful environmental influences that they’ve never been exposed to before, so it is vital that you use appropriate skincare products to protect your baby’s skin.

When it comes to planning for your new arrival, you can either do it the hard way by trying not to think about anything until your baby is here and hope for the best, or you can allow us to give you a helping hand (we recommend this option).

Everything you need to know about baby skin

Much like the innocence and vulnerability of infancy, baby skin is delicate and pure. It is up to 10x thinner than adult skin and requires a lot of love and care.

When a baby is born their skin is at an almost neutral (7) pH level of 6.5, whereas healthy adult skin is at a slightly acidic pH level of 5.5. Although baby skin will eventually reach the ideal pH value of 5.5 within the first days to weeks of life, they have a lot of catching up to do and are extremely vulnerable during this time. In fact, it can take up to the age of 12 for the skin’s natural protective function to fully develop.

This makes your baby susceptible to a number of skin conditions such as nappy rash and cradle cap, but don’t be alarmed as this is completely normal!

Everything you need to know about baby skin conditions

The thinness of baby skin puts it at risk of drying out and in some cases can cause eczema, a fairly common condition among babies. Although this is likely to be mild, it can cause your baby a lot of discomfort, so it’s important to keep your baby’s skin moisturised. Baby eczema can develop into a long-term skin condition; however, it is easily soothed with the right skincare products.

Cradle cap is another skin condition commonly found in babies. It is characterised by patches of greasy, scaly skin usually found in the scalp, face, and sometimes nappy area. If you notice patches of white or yellow greasy scales that seem to form a crust on your baby’s skin, cradle cap is most likely the culprit. Luckily, it is harmless and will not bother your baby. Although most babies will grow out of it in 6 to 12 months, there are of course things you can do to speed up the process such as applying an emollient to the affected area and gently brushing your baby’s scalp.

One of the most common, and unfortunately unavoidable, baby skin conditions is nappy rash. This is characterised by red, sore looking patches on your baby’s bottom. There may also be small spots or bumps in the affected area, and it can cause your baby a lot of discomfort. Nappy rash occurs due to your baby’s skin coming into contact with urine or faeces for a prolonged period, so it is important to change soiled nappies as soon as possible.

With all these skin conditions being a potential issue, it is important to choose the right skincare products to suit your child’s needs.

That’s where sebamed can help.

Everything you need to know about baby skincare

Baby skincare should be gentle, and it is important to use products that aid the skin in reaching its stable and healthy level of protection with the pH value of 5.5.

The sebamed baby range has been dermatologically developed to assist in the maturing of baby skin and support the natural development of the skin’s protective layer. The most important thing about this range is that these products are formulated to match the skin’s ideal pH level of 5.5. Baby sebamed also provides all round skincare; from gentle cleansers to moisturisers, soothing creams to body milk, and bubble bath to our ‘no tears’ formula shampoo, it is perfect for creating a skincare regime.

Although a skincare regime may sound like something you would implement for maturing skin, it is even more important for baby skin. Their skin is more susceptible to dryness and irritation and establishing a regular routine can help to support the skin and prevent these issues from reoccurring. Routines are very important for babies as they provide structure and predictability, which can create a feeling of safety and security for your child.

Ultimately, the most helpful thing you can do to protect your baby’s skin is to plan ahead and invest in skincare products that are specially formulated for their needs and can aid in their skin’s development. We can’t guarantee that you won’t have sleepless nights, but at least this is one less thing you’ll have to worry about!

If you’re trying to conceive (TTC), you probably know that there are certain foods and nutrients that become especially important once you’re pregnant. But nutrition plays a vital role even when trying to conceive, much like laying a strong foundation before constructing a house.

Certain nutrients create that foundation by supporting egg and sperm health (yes, nutrition matters for both partners), hormone balance and creating a hospitable environment for a fertilized egg to implant. In fact, studies show that certain nutrients can help increase fertility and improve success rates for both natural conception and fertility treatments.

In other words, nutrition is a key player in the TTC journey, but getting the right nutrients in the right quantities can be tricky. That’s where supplements come in. Just as you’d take a multivitamin to fill in nutritional gaps for optimal health, fertility supplements can give you that extra nutrient boost.
